Susanna a & Jonathan’s Subtropical wedding in Dorset

Filed under: Wedding Photography in Dorset and Hampsire — Tags: , , , , , , — one thousand words photography @ 9:55 pm

When we shoot outdoor wedding we keep a keen eye on the weather, and Susanna and Jonathan’s wedding at Abbotsbury Subtropical gardens was no exception. Fortunately as we drove into Weymouth last Saturday morning the clouds dissipated and we realised the weather was also going to be subtropical that day.

The chaps relaxed approach to wedding preparation

We met Jonathan, his family and friends at Oasis Café right on Weymouth beach in the sunshine- where, after a scrummy fry up she followed the chaps to don wedding suits with well co-ordinated, yellow wedding  ties and button holes.

At home Susanna and her friends arrived back from the hairdressers to bacon and avocado rolls (Susanna’s favourite). They started to prepare for the day ahead in a remarkably calm manner, applying makeup and dresses with plenty of time to spare and only one last minute dress adjustment. “Time to spare” meant time for champagne before leaving for the wedding.

Some thing old and blue with Champagne!

Outside in the glorious sunshine Susanna’s father had spent the morning cleaning, polishing and adding ribbons to his beautiful old blue Austin named Delilah. As we approached the ceremony through the green rolling hills of the Dorset costal countryside,  the top was taken down and Susanna arrived at Abbotsbury Tropical gardens in style.

Susanna looking stunning

Now I had previously met Susanna and Jonathan at Abbotsbury, so knew just how spectacular a venue it was, despite this the venue took my breath away. Guests had gathered around the lovely ceremony gazebo where Jonathan and his best men waited patiently, there a few venues surrounded by exotic plants and animals.

The outdoor ceremony seemed even more personal with a 360degree view on proceedings. The readings include the extract from AA Milne’s Whinne the Pooh, which is a guarantee for laughter and smiles during a ceremony (not that anyone needed encouragement).

The exchange of rings

The drinks reception and canapés were in the Sunken Gardens- a lawn surrounded with exotic plants and tall palm trees, you could have mistaken for somewhere in the tropics. The kookaburra’s laughs were to be heard over the flowing sound of the harpist as everyone enjoyed the afternoon sunshine.

We stole Susanna and Jonathan away for a quarter of an hour to walk through the gardens and up Magnolia Walk to the panoramic view point. Not surprisingly some of their guests had already made the climb to the stunning views across Chesil beach and Portland.

The wedding cakes

Back through the gardens the line-up was organised outside the marque and the wedding breakfast commenced. The wedding party was comprised of friends and family, some of whom had flown in from all over the world- a testament to just how lovely our bride and groom were. Both Rose and I commented how nice the marque was- fully carpeted with windows and a door, coloured sashes and tables laid out with origami boat name places and the two scrummy looking cakes (one of which had been flown over from Canada!) again with a blue and yellow countryside theme.

The compare introducing the speeches in space!

The tear and belly laughter inducing speeches against the starry backdrop finished off the meal before coffee was served. As the warming sun was now low in the sky we drove Susanna and Jonathan down to Chesil beach for a little walk and photographs by the sea. These guys were such good fun and so obviously in love the images of them throughout the day were naturally lovely.

When we returned the band had set up and were ready to go- it was one of those times where virtually all of the guests joined the bride and groom half way through the first dance. We have ever seen a dance floor fill so fast and stay full into the night. The band was obviously rocking the guests and all of a sudden we wished we had been guests and had enough energy left to dance the night away!.

Craig and Nicky wedding pre-shoot on the Dorset coast

Wedding Portrait photography in Dorset

Craig and Nicky on the beach

I first met Craig & Nicky for a coffee in a street cafe in London, a whole world away from the luscious green Dorset countryside they will be getting married in. They are such a fun loving couple with a serious eye for detail and have arranged what stands to be an incredible wedding organised for the end of July this year.

No longer nervous Nicky

As excited as I was about our ‘pre-wedding shoot’ and the beautiful locations we would be visiting there was a black cloud hanging over me. I mean this literally- the clouds actually looked like the darkened cartoon clouds displayed by my MET office weather app that morning.

These two are seriously good fun

Craig and Nicky didn’t let the impending bouts of rain get them down and in true English style we came out between showers for a walk along Chesil Beach. Nicky had said to me that she was a little nervous about having her photograph taken, which was one of the reasons for us venturing out for a shoot. She was incredible, beautiful and relaxed, perfectly natural in Craig’s arms- she certainly didn’t look nervous.

No need to be nervous

Spurred on by the bracing wind, hail stones and a sense of adventure we took to the footpath ascending the hill up to St Catherine’s Chapel in Abbotsbury. Craig had certainly chosen his spot for his marriage proposal well, the lovely old chapel stands with a 360 degree panoramic view of Dorset coast. Back when he proposed to Nicky this site would have been bathed in warm summer sun, not the wind and hail we were experiencing on that day.

Stunning view

One of the main factors in these guys wedding planning is of course the choice of venue. It’s a bit secret; Plush manor is really hard to find on the internet, aside from a few references to the music festival that happens there and it certainly isn’t mentioned as a wedding venue. This late 18th century house with swimming pool and guest accommodation is set in a variety of lovely gardens; perfect for a summer drinks reception. Craig and Nicky’s wedding reception will be the first ever at Plush Manor.

The church at Plush Manor

Plush manor has it’s own church but this is not an ordinary church. A lovely old building overlooking Dorset’s green rolling hills is currently used as a live music venue with a stage for artists adn the pews for audience. At the end of July however, it will be transformed into a gorgeous banqueting hall for Craig and Nicky’s wedding breakfast!

Photographers images of wedding couple under cherry blossoms

Cherry blossoms in the sun

Aside from portrait photographs under the arched cherry blossoms at the rear of the church Craig and Nicky had one last request of me, that involved drinking real ale. Not one to shy away from a challenge I accompanied them to the local pub, where I took some pictures of them with jugs of real ale. Unfortunately I may ruin a surprise for the guests if I reveal any more details so you will have to keep your eyes peeled for their sneak peak later in the year.

Wedding beer

Cheers!

Craig and Nicky have so many wonderful personal touches to the wedding planning to mention in one blog post, we can’t wait to shoot their big day.

Jackie and Mike’s Harbour Heights wedding- sneak peak

Filed under: Wedding Photographers in Dorset,Wedding Suppliers in Dorset — Tags: , , , , — one thousand words photography @ 2:51 pm

I know I’m always posting about how calm and relaxed brides and grooms are, but Mike and Jackie have to win an award- not only for organisation (there was some project management going on!) but for being so openly calm about their wedding day.
Mike and I hit it off instantly with our love of all things pie related and Jackie had planned the perfect wedding- keeping the amount of pomp and ceremony to a minimum and focussing on the personal touches, family and friends.
We found Jackie in the Bridal suite at the Harbour Heights Hotel, calm and relaxed as Mike’s two daughters- her bridesmaids whirled around her like the dervishes of old. With the panoramic backdrop of Sandbanks stretching into pool Harbour; shoes were tried, bags and phones assessed, nail polish applied, hair straightened, cards written, flowers investigated, speeches practiced, drinks ordered and champagne drank. With all of this going on, Jackie sat calmly enjoying her morning.

It was great to see Jess from Model Makeovers again (her second wedding of the day!)- A consummate professional who is so incredibly personable and produces some of the top wedding makeup we have ever seen.
At this point Rose left to deliver Mike his wedding Pork Pie (as I had promised) and found himand the best man also enjoying a bottle of champagne in preparation for the day ahead.

Once the guests had arrived Jackie and Mike had a short and lovely ceremony, both of them and their guests laughing and joking throughout.

The ceremony

The drinks reception took place on the Harbour Heights panoramic balcony with champagne, canapé’s and Pims. I had forgotten just how good the chef at the Harbour Heights is and how good the view can be.
The guests began blowing a cloud of bubbles over the bride and groom, then unleashed the largest amount of confetti I have ever seen. Inside Anna Greenhill and her team had set up the ‘surprise’ oyster bar, which looked and smelled amazing- much to the delight of the guests.

As their wedding guests mingled around the bar and lounge I stole Jackie and Mike away for a bit of a breather and some photographs on the beach, still cracking jokes it was clear that these two are made for each other.

Back at the hotel the ceremony room had been set up for the wedding breakfast and looked particularly wonderful. Instead of the typical wedding favours Jackie and Mike had donated to their favourite charities and had a gorgeous wedding cake on display.
Katie Francesca, the Harbour Heights stunning singer sang as the guests sat for the wedding breakfast, her smooth tones drifting through the hotel as the food arrived.
Now the speeches had the guests in stitches for a good half an hour. The combination of embarrassing and lovely stories, a projector and some particularly embarrassing photos made for some whole hearted laughter and tears of joy.
Its not often that we are mentioned by way of thanks in wedding speeches, but Mike was kind enough to do so (it’s probably a good thing that he didn’t notice me taking his pictures during but when he asked for me to thank I turned a certain shade of scarlet!). He also thanked Anna Greenhill and team, quite rightly too- they had again done a superb job and kept the day running smoothly along.

Mike and Jackie had one last surprise for their guests before the evening was done. They had been learning to tango in secret (even hiring the local village hall to practice), and stylishly whirled about the dance floor for their first dance as guests look on shocked, stunned and in balls of laughter.

I have never seen a group of people laugh for such a long time, Mike and Jackie’s wedding was just like them; personal and full of love, fun and laughter.

Jon and Shirley’s Cornish seaside wedding- a sneak peak

The phrase “spectacular venue” doesn’t come even close when describing Porth-en-Alls in Prussia Cove, Cornwall. Prussia cove itself consists of several private beaches, coves, sands and inlets all surrounded by unspoiled houses, cottages and almost touching the shoreline with its walled gardens Porth-en-Alls house. It rings of ancient smuggling stories around an open log fires in the winter and long sunny days on the beach in the summer. All of this during some baking March sun was to be the location of our latest Cornish wedding.

Porth-en-Alls House- a stunning Cornish wedding venue

Jonathan and Shirley are a couple that makes my heart melt, they are so happily in tune with one another it’s hard to believe that they weren’t yet married. They arrived early in their 1970’s VW camper “Mrs T” (which by the way they had just spent the last 7 years lovingly restoring together) and after settling in to their new grand surroundings were as active as the guests in preparing for the big day ahead.

Now it’s March, on teh cornish coast and the sun is shining like a balmy day in July, the beer barrels and sound systems arrive, delivered by friends. The large, bright dining hall is laid out in ivory and green with candles and favours as ‘The Round Kitchen’ caterers set up and fill the room with mouth watering smells. Val, the grooms mother (and respected artist) buzzed around creating and hanging ornamental paper balls, preparing her home made wedding cake, flower arranging and sign making. Jon’s sister Lucy (who also illustrated the invites, menus and order of the day) and musician extraordinaire Alex Chapman were to be found under the stone arches in the garden practicing their sax and guitar duet. The best men and ushers were ‘testing’ the beer and honing their ‘Hacky sack’ skills on the grass overlooking the sea. This was the day before the wedding and I was already overwhelmed by just how personal to Jon and Shirley the wedding was and just how much talent there was present (apart from the Hacky sack that is!).

Bright and early, the long anticipated wedding morning came. The groom’s party was to be found washing and preening with glasses of champagne as they donned their suits. Yet again the groom’s mother had applied her artistic talents and created ties and handkerchiefs from the same material that Shirley’s mum had made the fantastic favours. The boys looked exceptionally dapper.

Back in the ‘girls room’ Shirley had emerged in curlers and the bridesmaids set about preparing her and themselves in almost military (if not a chaotic military) fashion. Once hair and makeup had been perfected Shirley was tied into her dress by her mother- she looked amazing. At the same time Jon and the chaps waited patiently/ nervously with the guests in the warming sun of the walled garden.

Shirley’s father arrived to collect the girls and his face said it all- they all looked incredible (and were running early!).

As the MC’s bell announced the start of the ceremony Shirley, her father and her bride’s maids eloquently swept down from the upper house and garden, around the costal walkway and into the walled garden through a huge oak door. They had all been practicing their walks earlier in the morning and carried it off beautifully, Jon was a little lost for words when Shirley joined him in front of the registrar- I don’t blame him; she did look amazing.

Photograph Wedding ceremony in the walled garden at Porth-en-Alls

Wedding ceremony in the sun in the walled garden

After readings by the groom’s older sister and father, everyone had a jolly good sing along and Jon and Shirley were officially married in the sun by the sea. The drinks reception then started.

Now I have to mention the food, ‘The round kitchen’ catering had outdone themselves, mini fish and chips, mini Cornish pasties, mini Yorkshire puddings and mini scotch eggs were the tastiest compliment to champagne and Pims by the sea.

We quickly arranged the group photographs, so efficiently that I even had time to take the bride and groom for a quick walk before the wedding breakfast was called.

Time out for the bride and groom

Now as wedding photographers we’ve seen a lot of wedding speeches and I’ve even written a few myself but even these were a first for me. The father of the bride and groom’s speeches was so lovely and truly heartfelt that I welled up behind the camera and the best men’s speeches, delivered by all four best men had myself and the entire room in stitches.

Photograph of the wedding toasts

Wedding toasts during the breakfast

Again the caterers outdid themselves; mouth watering food, beautifully presented was served whilst Alex Chapman entertained. As the sun set, turning the sky a fiery crimson, the smell of scrummy food and sounds of music and happy chatter from the dining hall were caught on the wind and blown down to the local bay, further round the coast.

After the breakfast the barrels of beer were ‘officially’ opened, evening guests arrived and the cake was cut by a very happy looking bride and groom.

Photograph of Bride with boquet and a glass of champagne

A relaxing minute for the bride

Alex was on particularly good form playing guitar to the first dance, for which Jon and Shirley had been secretly learning the waltz. The stunned faces and whooping from guests showed just how surprised they were and once the guests joined them on the dance floor the night’s partying kicked off.

Photograph of the Bride and groom during the first dance

The first dance - John and Shirl on the dancefloor

I feel I should take some time to describe Alex Chapman and just how a ‘one man band’ can entertain at a wedding. Now when I initially looked at Jon and Shirley’s booking information I almost expected the stereotypical old man with a large drum on his back blowing into a harmonica whilst playing guitar with cymbals on his knees! On the contrary Alex was using some seriously modern (and seriously expensive) electronic kit to complement his spectacular musical ability. He was tapping out beats, sampling vocals, percussion and guitar rifts to layer entire tracks that he would then play and sing over to get the whole dance floor shaking. He also doubled as a DJ during his breaks- It’s very rare that we will meet anyone who works for so long and as hard as we do at a wedding, but was I wearing one I would have definitely taken my hat off to Alex.

Now this would be the point that my review would end, however Jon and Shirley had decided to extend their coverage. So we spent then next day in the sunshine on the local private beach, picnicking, dog walking, kite surfing, rock pooling and the least successful attempt at sea kayaking I’ve ever seen! In true British style this was all rounded off by a huge BBQ with all guests contributing to some part of the meal, preparation of cooking.

An hour before the sun set we headed off to Sennen cove in Jon and Shirley’s van, ‘Mrs T’ and during the golden hour of the evening captured some spectacular shots of them with the van,  barefoot on the beach and rocks. As with every bride and groom they were initially a little shy about the shoot but as soon as the camera started they loved the experience, dancing down the sun in the sand and surf!

This has to have been one of the most heart warming weddings I have been to; packed full of personal details and touches; packed full of close family and friends. Not just a photographer’s but a bride’s dream wedding!
