A Marrige Proposal Photoshoot In Swanage's Evening Sun

This is the story of Sawyer’s Swanage Bay proposal photo shoot. Sawyer contacted us to ask about a secret proposal shoot in June of this year. Now June was one hell of a month for us, in terms of weddings photographed, our busiest ever. The July date Sawyer preferred coincided with our availability.

He had a specific idea about where he would like to propose, as he had done his due diligence. And he had heavily researched our hometown of Swanage, and locations with the best views.

Planning The Perfect Marraige Proposal

We love the downs. From one side is a sweeping vista over grasslands and trees, down to the town and bay, framed by the Purbeck Hills. On the other side is a clifftop view over the sea, towards the Isle of Wight and the horizon.

Sawyer’s girlfriend (hopefully soon to be his fiancée) had grown up in the Caribbean. So, in his own words, the "ocean" view was very important to him.

Proposal shoots are all about the planning and logistics. Getting down on one knee is hard enough. So the more heavy lifting we can do with the planning beforehand, the better. It really takes the pressure off when it comes to the important moment. Talking with Sawyer, he had read our article on "Why You Need An Engagement Photo Shoot", and already devised a plan to pretend to be going out for a fancy dinner. They would walk through the downs "on the way". He loved our hands-on approach to planning the details and the experienced advice, hints, and times I could provide.

Proposal Guidence and Advice

I suggested that he actually did book a fancy dinner. Even with the surprise and high from a proposal, the lack of a fancy dinner may be felt.

We organised realistic timings, restaurant recommendations and map locations. Then checked what the sun and weather would be doing. Eventually crafting a plan for the exact spot and secret signals for the proposal. I created a timeline and checklist for him to minimise possible mistakes. Finally checking in, with a final phone call before ‘game day'.

A Marriage Proposal Overlooking Swanage Bay

The proposal evening had arrived. I sat at the top of the downs in the long grass, keeping an eye on the vista for the happy couple. I knew exactly the route they would be taking and where Sawyer would propose. So I had positioned myself perfectly. I received a selfie and a warning that they were leaving their accommodation from Sawyer. That way I knew exactly who to look out for and when they would be arriving.

The low warm evening sun was wonderful. As I pretended to read a book while subtly watching Sawyer and his girlfriend walk towards me. A wonderful sense of calm swept over me. I don’t think Sawyer felt the same, as I could see him nervously checking his pocket for the engagement ring.

As planned, they stopped, embraced, and Sawyer dropped to one knee. His girlfriend's reaction was priceless. The world had clearly just shrunk around them, and they were alone in their little love bubble. From afar, I photographed the couple, in close with a long lens, and in the context of the vista with a wider lens. From her reaction, Sawyer’s now fiancée had clearly said yes and was utterly over the moon.

A Post-Proposal Couple Shoot On The Dorset Coast

A lot of kissing, hugging, and ring checking later, and I had allowed enough time to introduce myself. I could instantly see why the ring was being checked over and over again, as the huge diamond and detailing shone brightly in the sun.

We took a brief stroll around the downs, as I photographed the couple on the move. They had never had professional photos taken before. They found my relaxed and friendly approach refreshing.

With a multitude of stunning locations available, I worked with the best light and backdrops. We walked up to the clifftop overlooking Swanage's Victorian Pier and the sea. We popped over to the lookout and made our way down to the bay through the wild flower meadows. As you can tell from the pictures, Sawyer and his fiancée experienced a wonderful combination of coastal locations and lighting. They initially had reservations about having professional images taken. However, they were both natural in front of the camera.
